He Live's: That is a wonderful review straight from where the heart & mind join together. Kinda cool that I had just swithced over to Dick's Pick #29, Disc 3, before reading your review, huh? I needed that post-"China Doll," pre-"Playin' in the Band" jam right now ...do you have any idea what's goin' on inside that jam, 1977-05-19 from the "Fox Theatre?" -- it sounds like one of those one-of-a-kind Jerry classics (never to be resurrected again.. but I don't know for sure.)
I like how you point out the difference between the "East coast" and "West coast" dudes. I noticed it on my first show out West -- Boulder, 1980 -- and thereafter as well. Just different -- not sayin' one was better than the other, but "something" was different, especially since I toured alone. [I regret never seeing the Jerry Band out West to see if there was a difference there as well.]

Thanks a lot for your insight ...will check out that "Franklin's Tower" when this "Fox" jam concludes,

hey ashes,

that FOX theatre run, i think, is THE ONE that hooked me when i was a kid -- i remember sitting in a car (as you often did in the suburbs) one night with my super-deadhead buddy and at the peak of some utterly mind-melting jam and we both just started cracking up at the same time -- both sucked up into a serious EUPHORIA -- my friend, giggling, almost weeping, head in hands, looked at me and said --- "Jerry Garcia...." -- not sure what i said, if anything, probably just something along the lines of ".....God...."

(not like he was god or anything, just the way you would say it if you see someone almost get hit by a bus, or, when all the sudden you look up and there is an unreal purple and orange sunset unfolding, or coming over the first high ridge on a hike, and you see out for miles after trudging through the woods, you realize there is farther to go than you can remotely comprehend -- we are small -- but sometimes we get a glimpse of something bigger.....)

this forum recording is a little rough, but FOTD, Candyman, Franklin's and China Doll find jerry approaching that "special place" -- hope you dug it....

He Live's: don't worry, you don't have to explain to me about the, "..oh, god!.." exclamation. I know exactly what you mean ...and, more importantly, don't mean.

He Live's: have I ever turned you onto a post-"China Doll" solo-Jerry jam from 1985-03-31 [Portland, Maine]. There's about 8 recordings on the archive and I have no clue which one is worth hearing, however you gotta hear Jerry's long solo after the band leaves the stage about 1-min after the end of "China Doll" ...and then he returns - SOLO AGAIN - after a very, very brief break to continue the solo --- listen to the crowd: reminds me of the Egypt trance-like rhythm clap. ...another one of those "one-of-a-kind" moments in time, outside of time, that I know you will appreciate.... irregardless of the quality of the recording; just listen to Jerry, Billy and the audience.

Here's just one version:

See you late tonight (if my computer is still alive),

They also did several with Brent jams before drums, eg 6-14-85:

testing...player embed failed...

BTW, I didn't remember/know about the Jerry jams before space -- thanks.

spacedface: nice call... I was only aware of the first set from this show. Jerry poured his heart out pre-drums in the 2nd set.... intense stuff.

Thank You,

A great show, I asked David Lemieux if this show was in the vault and unfortunately along with Euguene 78 is not in the vault. Thank goodness for AUD's

"countmlbjam:" (nice moniker) ...yes, thank god for AUDs and the thousands of people who poured tens-of-thousands of dollars and countless hours into preserving these treasures. ....I must admit that when I heard that "China Doll" earlier tonight it practically tore my heart out... had to take a break after that one.

Are you familiar with that Portland, ME version I keep preaching about: 1985-03-31? ...even the band had turned themselves inside-out after Jerry's solo's: they did the "inverted 'Playin in the Band'" post drums.

"Eugene '78" you mention is that wild Jerry solo, I reckon(?) What's it called?

Yeah, "thanks for the AUDs" and thanks for contributing posts to keep this space alive,

Ah, Sunshine Day Tripper... it never occurred to me why they did that song. Not that the GD versions compare well...but this DT was ok.

Was this show part of a 2-day stand?

spacedface: yes, this was the first of two nights. When they opened with that "Music Never Stopped," I remember thinking, "..oh, man, THIS show is gonna be something different --- for good or ill."

Very, Very, Heavy-duty East coast energy in a smaller-than-usual arena ...adrenaline still rushing through the veins from the Maine State Troopers pullling over almost every car on Rt. 95 ("..huh, Mr. Trooper? "Grateful What?" ...no clue; I'm on a business trip. How far to Sanford, Sir?"

So, spacedface, I can't find anybody to confirm that they listened to these two Jerry solo's. Did you? It was one of the only "GD" shows (over 350+) that I witnessed Jerry walk up to the microphone before the encore and actually "thank" the audience. [How about the crowd during the post-Space solo(?)] ....and I swear it sounds like Weir messed with the lyrics of "Day Tripper" for just one line.....typical Weir stuff....not worth even trying to find.

Sorry about the long post; got no painkillers and I need something to kill the pain,

The AUD is good, esp with the bigger ambience in Day Tripper, but I do prefer the SBD for Space and Playing. Oh yeah, a thank you isn't common.

I'm more in a '68 or '73 moods lately so '85 isn't holding my attention as much these days.

spacedface: I understand. The brethren here re-introduced me to the 1968, 1970, and 1973-1974 "Grateful Dead." No words to describe the experience. It's intense how much the keyboards had an effect on the overall texture of their performances ....

I needed that.... It is an overcast, grey "Holy Thursday" morning here in Boston ...and I haven't opened the curtains yet to see what it's like outside.... I needed that more than you'll ever realize...

Thank You Kindly,

A dusty gem: New Haven 5/5/77.

Great sound (Betty Board). Stream Music Never Stops - How many individual mikes you can distinguish (Bass, Drummer's foot, Cymbals, Bobby, Donna ... )as the song builds? Can almost hear the shepards hook used to pull Jerry out of the groove and off stage. (That'll make sense when ya hear it) :)

I've compared this to Winterland 6/9, DeKalb and Portland. Based upon sound quality - this Betty Board shines.

New Haven ... Who knew?

6/4/77 IS a great '77 sleeper show, but I have to admit, I find it hard to get past the poor sound recording. Would LOVE to hear this one as a typically crystal clear Betty Board.
